Climbing and via Ferrata in Guara

R

ocks, water and sun. This is the formula which makes Guara such a unique place, with its rock formations, eroded walls, and karstic formations. They are the perfect combination to enjoy climbing up enchanting walls that are like no other. Among the rocks, there are birds, cave paintings, endemic rupicolous flora, and so on. They all coexist in harmony with people trekking, climbing, doing via ferratas or canyoning in Guara, who have been invited to explore the magic of the area’s vertical spots. Visitors from all over the world who are interested in getting vertical and close to the rocks will find Guara to be an excellent place for climbing and via ferratas.

Guara has one of the most famous climbing schools in Europe, Rodellar.

Sport climbing and bouldering are the most popular forms of climbing in Guara.

There are several areas in Guara where you can go climbing. There are also climbing areas in Rodellar, Alquézar and Vadiello. At the hotel, we have various items on sale or to lend if you do this sport regularly.

Escalada en el Valle de Rodellar

Rodellar Area

Despite having been discovered a relatively short time ago by sport climbing lovers, Rodellar is a paradise for sport climbing. This area is certainly ranked among the best in Spain. At the heart of the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, there are over 300 routes in different areas.

You can see limestone rock along routes with vaults and drops. Ranging up to 40 metres—or more in some cases—, these are spectacular routes for the athletically inclined.

The following rocks are already well well-known among many climbers: Cuca Bellostas, Ciudadela, the impressive walls of San Martín del Alcanadre or Peña Calma in Balced, the walls of la Virgen, and Las Ventanas de Mascún.

The Mascún area is a classic. It attracts the most visitors, not only because of how easy it is to get there from Rodellar, but also thanks to its nearby river where visitors can cool down during the hot summer days.

Alquézar climbing area

This is a very interesting place to go climbing. The area is beautiful and located close to the tourist town of Alquézar. There is a technical sport area, with slightly collapsed walls and mostly long routes. With over 100 routes, there are hardly of them that are easy or intermediate.

Guara climbing area in Vadiello

In the Embalse de Vadiello area, there are many climbing zones in the so-called Mallos de Ligüerri. Accessible from the Vadiello motorway, some areas to the left of the Embalse are: “El Puro”, “Mallo San Jorge”, and “La Mitra”. There are also other sport climbing areas with short routes. Located to the right of the Embalse are: “Huevo de San Cosme”, “Mallos Quillán y Punta Negra” and “La Predicadera”.

Though not located in Guara, it is worth making a getaway to Riglos, one of the leading places for climbing conglomerate rock formations. Walls in Guara are virtually 100% limestone. Riglos is an important natural site and is approximately one hour away by car.

Climbing in Riglos

The Mallos de Riglos are widely known among climbing enthusiasts. There is no doubt that this setting is ideal for climbing. It is made up of conglomerate rock walls stretching over 300 metres high. Their main features are “bolos” or pebbles, which are used by climbers as their primary form of support.

Some other climbing areas in Riglos include: El Pisón, El Puro, El Macizo de Pisón, Los Volaos, El Cuchillo, El Melchor Frechín, La Visera, Los Mallos Pequeños and Los Boulders de Riglos.
There are about 200 routes ranging between 200 and 300 m, except for the areas at the base and the small mallos, which barely exceed 100 m. Access any of the climbing areas from the town of Riglos.

Via Ferratas

Via ferratas are (usually aerial) routes or paths along rock walls, followed using the necessary grips made available to help us advance easier. Along with the corresponding safety line, via ferratas use stairs, Tibetan bridges, cable clips set into walls, chains, handrails, etc. These routes lead you to discover very interesting places which you otherwise would not be able to access, and this is all possible without needing to be familiar with basic climbing techniques.

In Guara, there are various via ferratas that are perfectly equipped and ideal for you to get started in this sport that closely resembles mountain climbing.

If you want to get started or spend a day trying out climbing, our specialist partners will be delighted to organize days filled with guided activities for you. This way, you’ll only have to think about enjoying the experience of going up the rocks and basking in Guara’s fresh air.  Check out our Guara Moments for Via Ferrata Adventures.
