Guara has one of the most famous climbing schools in Europe: Rodellar.

Sport climbing and bouldering are the most popular forms of climbing in Guara.

There are several areas and schools where this sport is practised, such as Rodellar, Alquézar and Vadiello. In our hotel Hostería de Guara we have all the necessary documentation for the sale or rental of equipment if you regularly practice this sport.

Escalada en el Valle de Rodellar

Rodellar Area

Despite having been discovered relatively recently by lovers of this sport, Rodellar is a paradise for sport climbing. This school is undoubtedly among the best in Spain. In the heart of the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Park there are more than 300 climbing paths in different sectors.

Limestone rock with climbing paths where the vaults and overhangs stand out, with routes reaching up to 40 metres in some cases, making them more athletic and spectacular.

The following walls are already well known to many climbers: Cuca Bellostas, Ciudadela, the impressive walls of San Martín del Alcanadre or Peña Calma in Balced, the walls of La Virgen, and Las Ventanas de Mascún.

Due to its easy access from Rodellar and its proximity to the river, the Mascún area is the most classic and most visited, an ideal place to take a refreshing bath on hot summer days.

Alquézar climbing area

This is a very interesting place for climbing. The area is beautiful and close to the charming town of Alquézar. There is a technical sport area, with slightly collapsed walls and mostly long routes. Approximately 100 of which there are only medium and low grade climbs.

Guara climbing area in Vadiello

In the area of the Vadiello reservoir there are many climbing areas in the so-called Mallos de Ligüerri. On the left side of the reservoir with access from the Vadiello road, the Puro, Mallo San Jorge or the Mitra are some examples, as well as other short route sport climbing sectors. On the right side of the reservoir are: Huevo de San Cosme, Mallos Quillán and Punta Negra and La Predicadera.

Although it is not in Guara, Riglos is one of the stars of conglomerate climbing, contrasting with the almost 100% limestone wall of Guara. A visit to Riglos, a natural monument, about an hour’s drive away, is worthwhile.

Climbing in Riglos

The Mallos de Riglos are widely known among climbing enthusiasts. Undoubtedly, this scenario is ideal for the practice of this sport as it is formed by conglomerate walls of more than 300 metres in vertical, whose main characteristic are the “bolos” or boulders, which are the main support for the climbers.

Riglos also has different climbing sectors such as the Pisón, the Puro, the Macizo de Pisón, the Volaos, the Cuchillo, the Melchor Frechín, the Visera, the small mallos and the Riglos boulders, among others.

It has some 200 routes of between 200 and 300 metres, except for the areas at the base and the small mallos, where they hardly exceed 100 metres. The access to the climbing area of any of the sectors is the village of Riglos.

If you want to get started or spend a day trying out climbing, our specialist partners will be delighted to organize guided activities for you. This way, you’ll only have to think about enjoying the rocks and fresh air in Guara and its surroundings. Check out our Guara Moments for Climbing Adventures.

If you go on your own, remember that climbing is a regulated activity in the Sierra and Canyons of Guara Natural Park. Please check the regulations.

Via Ferratas

Via ferratas are routes or paths (usually aerial) along rock walls, followed using the necessary grips made available to help us advance easier. Along with the corresponding safety line, via ferratas use stairs, Tibetan bridges, cable clips set into walls, chains, handrails, etc. These walkways lead you to discover interesting places that would otherwise be inaccessible to you, and all without the need for basic climbing skills.

In Guara there are several via ferratas that are perfectly equipped and ideal for beginners in this sport, which is very similar to climbing.
